We moved through the crowded passage toward the executive suites. Charlie wasn’t brave enough to let anyone get near him in the corridors. I remembered how he was like that after taking over the Hebat too. He had food tasters and all kinds of protection set up around himself. The shrinking coward.

The crowd didn’t thin out like I had expected, and after looking around, I saw why. Marauders peeled off to go in other directions but were replaced by kids. The chinkos were converging, and at the corner ahead I saw a group of bigger boys blocking our path.

I stopped in front of the oldest one. He had developed a bit of fuzz on his chin, but not enough to call a beard. “What?”

“You come.” The boy flipped a finger down the corridor to the right.

I gave Ligan a look, and he approved with a nod. We went in that direction, moving away from the executive suites, which meant that maybe the chinko leader didn’t want me there.

We’d gone a little way when the boys ahead of us stopped and moved to one side or the other. At the end of the path stood Jeeno, the leader of the chinkos. “You stupid again.”

“What do you mean?” I asked.

“Chinko boys hear. Them know everything. You go see Emperor. Stupid.”

“I know what I’m doing. He has something that I want, and I’m going to get it.”

“Is stupid. Him kill you,” said Jeeno.

“No. I brought too many supplies. He doesn’t dare have me killed; at least not yet.”

“Mens talking. Them say you want be new emperor. Going too fast. Commanders no like. You stop.”

“But I’m not moving up at all,” I argued. “In fact, I still only have one ship that I came in. I don’t want more power. I just want what Charlie stole from me.”

“Stupid. You meet with emperor, him make you dead.”

“That’s a chance I’ll have to take. I’m not leaving without what I came for.” I looked around at the other boys. “Have you been receiving the food that my crew has brought over?”

“Boys eating good. You got more?”

“I handed it off what I had to boys on my way out of the arena tonight. I don’t have anything with me right now.”

“You okay,” Jeeno said. “Chinkos like you. But no can save you from emperor. Be careful, Vargas.”

“I will.”

“Boys say you want Builder. Is true?”

I looked around. We’d been talking in the open, thinking that no one was listening. I should have known better. Not only would some of the boys have heard, but someone may have reported it to Charlie too. “Builder. You mean Alejandro Vides? Yes, it’s true,” I whispered.

There was a murmur through the corridor, and various boys were shaking their heads. Jeeno stepped forward. “Builder good man. Him helped lots chinkos. Why you want kill him?”

“I have to,” I answered, “but I can’t explain why. He is a great man, and it isn’t right for him to suffer like that every night.
